BC + AI: A Mycelial Network of Innovation for a Human‐First Future

Strategic Vision Briefing Prepared by KK
Our Unique Approach & Values‑Driven Impact
The BC + AI Ecosystem Association is Canada’s first grass‑roots, community‑powered AI industry body. We believe the future of artificial intelligence must be shaped by people and place, not by distant corporate mandates. Our guiding metaphor is a mycelial network… an underground web that enables trees to share nutrients and signals. Likewise, we connect technologists, artists, entrepreneurs, Indigenous knowledge keepers, policymakers, and everyday citizens into a living fabric of shared resilience and creativity.
Success ≠ individual exits. Success = collective flourishing. We measure progress through the growth, empowerment, and inclusion of the whole ecosystem.
Deep & Technical, Community‑Driven Innovations
Indigenous AI & Economic Reconciliation
- Web‑scraping & insight engine surfaces under‑reported Indigenous economic activity, honouring Indigenous Data Sovereignty and reconciliation goals.
Creative AI & Human‑Centric Design
- British Columbia is emerging as a global creative AI hub, driven by a fusion of imagination, collaboration, and bold experimentation. Unlike cookie-cutter tech centers, BC’s AI ecosystem has its own style, shaped by strengths in film, gaming, and design
- A case study in UBC’s BC Studies Journal documents the early rise of BC’s decentralized, human-first AI movement—built “without corporate capture or gatekeepers.”
- The community cultivates wayfinding rituals through its online 500 member groupchat curating resources and linking members to aligned projects and collaborators.
Advancing AI Literacy & Problem‑Solving
- 2,600‑person Vancouver AI Community Meetups turned ideas into prototypes within weeks… e.g. a Punjabi voice chatbot for seniors, and a Food Bank donation‑forecast tool built by high‑school students.
Data‑Driven Insights for Public Good
- Data Storytelling Hackathon uses Angus Reid survey data to map Canadians’ hopes and identity in the age of AI, informing policy and investment.
